Protector of the forest. Important and sacred to many Indigenous peoples. It’s easy to sense the power of this very spiritual plant.

Devils Club is classified as an adaptogen, as it affects the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, supporting a healthy stress response. It has been traditionally used for colds, flu, and bronchitis, as it supports the body in removing excess mucus from the respiratory system. It has also been traditionally used to stabilize diabetes, as a mild laxative, and stomach soother.

Historically used in shamanic initiation and protection rituals, Devils Club is regarded as protective; and is placed above doorways, on fishing boats, or worn as an amulet to ward off evil. It was also used for smoke cleansing during epidemics. Many Indigenous folktales record a fleeing hero, throwing a prickly object behind them which then turned into an impassable thicket of devils club, in which the pursuer is entangled and torn.
